Climate Resilience in Agriculture

Building agriculture that can withstand a changing climate.

Supporting farming communities to adapt to climate change, protect natural resources, strengthen food security and build sustainable livelihoods.

Programme Overview

Helping communities adapt while protecting the future of farming.

Climate change continues to threaten agricultural production across Kenya through prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, floods, pests and land degradation.

POAK's Climate Resilience in Agriculture Programme supports farming communities to adapt to these changing conditions while improving productivity, protecting ecosystems and strengthening long-term food security.

The programme integrates climate adaptation, environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture and disaster risk reduction into community development.

Programme goal

To build farming communities that are better prepared for climate-related challenges while sustaining agricultural productivity, natural resources and household livelihoods.

Why this programme matters

Preparing communities for a changing climate.

Farmers are increasingly affected by drought, unpredictable rainfall, flooding, soil degradation and water scarcity.

POAK works with communities to strengthen their ability to anticipate, adapt to and recover from climate-related challenges while protecting the resources on which agriculture depends.

Climate Adaptation Promoting resilient crops, farming practices and planning approaches that respond to changing climatic conditions.
Food Security Strengthening agricultural systems that can provide reliable food and nutrition despite climate pressures.
Environmental Protection Encouraging sustainable land management, agroforestry and practices that restore ecosystems.
Community Resilience Helping households and communities prepare for and recover from climate-related shocks.
Strategic Focus Areas

Practical solutions for climate-resilient agriculture.

The programme combines agricultural adaptation, environmental conservation and community preparedness to create more resilient farming systems.

01

Climate Adaptation

Promoting drought-tolerant crops, resilient farming practices and adaptive planning.

02

Soil Health

Improving soil fertility through composting, cover crops, mulching and conservation agriculture.

03

Water Conservation

Supporting rainwater harvesting, efficient irrigation and watershed protection.

04

Agroforestry

Integrating trees into farming systems to improve soil health, biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

05

Disaster Risk Reduction

Strengthening community preparedness for droughts, floods and other climate-related hazards.

06

Climate Information Services

Providing farmers with timely weather information and climate advisory services to support informed decision-making.

Partnership Opportunities

Programme Highlights

Starting with communities where climate resilience matters most.

POAK has identified communities for the initial implementation phase. These locations will serve as pilot sites for demonstrating practical climate resilience approaches that can be adapted and replicated in other regions.

  • Isiolo County
  • Congo Community – Ruiru

Pilot approach

The programme will work closely with local farmers, extension officers and community stakeholders to demonstrate climate-resilient farming practices, strengthen local knowledge and improve preparedness for climate-related risks.

Expected Outcomes

From adaptation to lasting resilience.

Through practical training, appropriate technologies and community-led adaptation, the programme aims to strengthen both agricultural productivity and the capacity of households to withstand climate shocks.

Climate-resilient farming systems
Improved agricultural productivity
Increased household incomes
Enhanced food and nutrition security
Restored ecosystems
Reduced vulnerability to climate shocks
Stronger community resilience
Long-term Impact

Resilient farms. Protected ecosystems. Stronger communities.

The programme aims to build resilient farming communities that can adapt to climate change, protect natural resources, sustain agricultural productivity and strengthen long-term food and livelihood security.
